Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How does filtration work?
A: A pump draws water from the pond through a bottom drain and skimmer. The water enters the filtration unit with bubble bead media, then passes through an ultraviolet light, which processes algae. For more on this process see Filtration System.
Q: Do I need to run the water feature all the time?
A: Yes, for maximum water quality the unit should run constantly so that the water is continually moving and is being continually processed. With the three-way valve the system running the waterfall can be optional without stopping the filtration.
Q: How expensive is it to run the system?
A: The pump is rated at a 2amp draw @ 4800 gal.per hour. Compared to a swimming pool pump which draws 6-8 amps, this pump is cost effective.
Q: Is the maintenance tedious?
A: Merely turn the handle to backflush. You will see the green water discharging. This should be done weekly. The skimmer which collects surface debris should be checked daily and emptied when full. No foam pads to wash. No sand raking.
Q: What does the UV light do?
A: The ultraviolet filter consists of a tube with an inner glass tube which houses a 40 watt light. The piping throughout the system uses PVC solid and flexible at one and a half inches.
Q: Why do I need a skimmer?
A: The skimmer is connected to the suction side of the pump. Located away from the edge of the pond, aereation jets below surface create a current to float debris into the skimmer basket.
